Islamic Change Over Time Essay Essay

By the early eighteenth century, the Ottoman Empire was in decline. The weak rulers of the empire left the way open for power struggles among officials, religious experts, and Janissary commanders. Provincial administrators and landholders conspired to drain revenue from the central treasury. The general economy suffered from competition with the West as imported goods ruined local industry. European rivals took advantage of Ottoman weakness. The Austrians pushed the Ottomans from Hungary and the northern Balkans. Russia expanded into the Caucasus and Crimea. The subject Christian peoples of the Balkans challenged their rulers: the Greeks won independence 1830, and Serbia won independence in 1867. European military assaults and diseases destroyed existing civilizations. African and Asian civilizations were able to withstand the early European arrival, but the latter’s continuing development by the end of the eighteenth century made them dominant. The subordinate civilizations reacted differently. Some retreated into an idealized past; others absorbed ideas from their rulers. The various efforts at resistance did not all succeed. Some civilizations survived; others collapsed. The leaders and thinkers of the Islamic world were divided about how to reverse decline and drive back Europeans. They argued over a spectrum ranging from a return to the past to the adoption of Western ways. By the nineteenth century, the Arabs under the weakened Ottoman Empire were exposed to the danger of European conquest. The loss of Islamic territory to the Europeans engendered a sense of crisis in the Middle East. The Muslims had faced the threat of the West since the Middle Ages. Muslims shared many aspects of culture with Judeo-Christian and Greek tradition; their civilization had contributed to the rise of the West. The Muslims had many centers to defend; the fall of the Ottoman Empire did not mean the end of Islamic independence. They had time to learn during the long Western advance. Muslims could cling to the truths of Islam and survive as a people,

Aurora Leigh

The story of Aurora Lee Aurora Lee is the story of a fictitious poet. This story is the greatest achievement of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. This is the first major poem in English literature, heroine is a female writer like a writer. This story is related to the aurora as an emerging poet of society, except for women who are artists. Because of the role of society, society imposes restrictions on women. Society basically defines women as imprisoned. In Aurora Leigh, Elizabeth Barrett Browning presents a refreshing role against Victorian norms. Furthermore, she created Aurora Lee's aunt as a character to show off the real feminist nature of Aurora. The idea of a Victorian lady, Aurora Leigh's aunt, is all that she is not. Browning used a cold image to outline her aunt's appearance: Her forehead is slightly thin and knitted tight ... brown hair stabbed with gray / cold used in life. Draw on the ground (1181). Aurora Leigh's aunt looks like a living woman and a person's life. Lee stated, She lived in the past, I would say this is a harmless life, she calls it a benign life ... this is not life at all (1181). Aurora regarded her aunt's good life as restrictive and suffocating existence. Not only did my aunt often live an organized life, men asserted the traditional sex role (or rule) established by men in the male world. When Barrett Browning first came up with Aurora Leigh, she announced that she entered our conference and was hurried to the living room. Angels are afraid of trampling intention; - face-to-face communication, no mask, please wait for the human nature of the times (Knox 36). Fusing AuroraLeigh's novel with poetry, she thought of this. During this time Victorian people thought about this. Novels are suitable for female writers Poetry is limited to men Type classification is a perfect example of deep-seated gender restriction of the time, and in order to despise social prejudice by writing in two types, It is Barrett Browning that use s mature opportunities.

Poverty and the Distribution of income during the Reagan years Research Paper

Poverty and the Distribution of income during the Reagan years - Research Paper Example Name of the Student Name of the Professor Course No. Date Poverty and the Distribution of Income during the Reagan Years I. Introduction United States had a Republican form of administration from 1981 to 1989. The administration was under the 40th president of United States named Ronald Reagan. This essay tries to focus on the level of poverty and income distribution in the Reagan years in United States. The pattern of governance under Reagan in U.S. was in favor of reducing the state owned programs. Ronald Reagan has announced the highest across board tax redemptions in American history. The different economic policies that were introduced by the president were mainly examples of supply side economics; they were often termed as ‘Reaganomics’. 1 The concept of what is now known as Privatization was first introduced by Reagan; he always encouraged the private spending by limiting the growth of state expenditures. Reagan successfully won re-election in U.S. by taking activ e measures to reduce inflation and extra regulations imposed by the government. However it was a noticeable fact that the fiscal debt was successfully incrementing during this period of economic history. II. Poverty and Income Distribution in the Reagan Period The epoch of Reagan governance in U.S. was often termed as the ‘Reagan Revolution’ as the economy both in and beyond U.S. was significantly influenced by the faith that the ruling president had in laissez-faire economy. 2 It has always been a subject of study for economists and analysts concerning the extent of inequality and income distribution in U.S. It is analyzed that after a long period of equitable income distribution, income equality started to fall in most of the English speaking nations from 1970 onwards mainly in the U.S. It was found that in the Reagan era the gap between rich and low income classes started to increase.3 This is because Reagan paved a way for almost a ‘U’ turn in U.S. econ omy. The nation started to invest primarily in speculation purposes by increasing its offshore stash.4 The country also started to outsource its factor services like labor required for productive purposes. The following was done in order to get sources at lower cost. U.S. governance during this period supported growth of business and industry at the cost of abating the organized labor power of the economy.5 Reaganomics made the country to spend less in welfare purposes, led to reduced corporate taxes and reduced spending on military services.6 It was believed by Krugman that the tax cuts made by the government during this period increased the costs of the lower 60% population and gave profit to the upper 40% income group.7 It was found during this period that the mean wage of the common households in U.S during this period was approximately $2000 while the average wage of the steelworkers was almost close to $4000.8 Rather the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation has abolished the allowances of unilateral transfer payments to the old section of the society. The labor unions were made almost powerless under the extreme rules and regulations of the government. Thus the U.S. economy was subjected to high income inequality during this era. The table given below depicts the level of income inequality in U.S. from the years 1967 to

Principles of Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 2

Principles of Marketing - Essay Example Most companies also began putting a great amount of effort into the marketing that went on for the distribution, sale and purchase of cars; manufacturers tried to bring about cost effectiveness while keeping in mind the kind of style and prestige that customers wanted to be associated with in terms of the car they were about to purchase. Advertising thus began to take up a huge part of the business because producers and manufactures tried to attract more and more customers towards their showrooms by displaying what the customer wanted. Muscle cars were initially used with the help of great design and specification with the hope of attracting car enthusiasts to the store who could then spread the message by word of mouth as well. Further, the print media also took a popular stance as cars could be advertised with picturesque beauty and catchy captions, attracting different sections of the potential consumers and target market. Since then right till the 21st century, cars have played a very important role in the manufacturing industry and as the years have gone by, better looking cars for different kinds of people with different incomes and budgets have been created. This industry has boomed a great deal and has gone from providing only the rich people with such a luxury to making the demand for cars quite an elastic one. However, despite such differences, the main target market or consumers of the automobile or car industry continue to be men – both enthusiasts of cars and motor vehicles as well as everyday working men who need a mode for commuting every now and then. Gradually, women have also taken to having their own cars as more importance and independence has been thrust on to them. Today if we take a look at the different levels of segmentation with respect to the potential target markets, the car industry is also greatly influenced by purchases made by young teenagers who have started learning

The importance of exercise for a healthy life style Research Paper

The importance of exercise for a healthy life style - Research Paper Example Previous reports by the Surgeon General were delivered on topics such as the adverse health consequences of smoking, nutrition, violence, and HIV/AIDS. These reports heightened the public's awareness of these important health issues and led the way for major public health initiatives (Miller 1). Dr. Manley described the 1996 Surgeon General's first Report on Physical Activity and Health as more than just a summary of the science but also as a national call to action. Physical activity now joined sound nutrition, seat belt use, and the negative health effects of tobacco use as essential health objectives for the nation. Dr. Manley ascertained that due to the direct relationship between physical activity and disease prevention and premature death, Americans must get serious about their commitment to healthy physical activity (Miller 1). Sedentary lifestyle or inactivity is a major contributor to obesity and being overweight as well as to numerous other diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. There is a growing body of literature indicating that regular physical exercise may prove beneficial in lessening the consequences or preventing the onset of a wide range of disease and chronic conditions (Jonker 38- 43; Pinto 247). Exercise and Physical Health According to the Surgeon General, due to lifestyle and dietary changes, obesity and overweight have reached epidemic proportions in United States. While there are numerous reasons for the overweight and obesity epidemic, it is undisputed that nutritional habits as well as physical inactivity are major contributors to the problem. Blair and Brodney (1999) reported that epidemiological studies consistently showed that active persons were protected against the health risks of being overweight or obese and actually had lesser mortality and morbidity. Regular physical activity resulted in positive metabolic changes that appeared to provide part of the protection against disease. S ince these positive metabolic changes were found to occur independently of body composition changes, the authors suggested the promotion of physical activity without an emphasis on weight changes, thus avoiding the frustration many obese individuals feel toward exercise since their efforts often do not lead to changes in weight or body composition. Brodney et al. (459- 467) examined the nutritional habits of men and women across three fitness categories (high, moderate, and low) and compared their nutritional intake to the national dietary recommendations. Results showed that both women and men with increased fitness levels consume diets with a significantly lower percent of calories derived from fat and saturated fat, had significantly higher dietary fiber intake and significantly lower cholesterol intake than did those less fit individuals. The more fit individuals consumed diets that more closely aligned with the national dietary recommendations. The Surgeon General (USDHHS, 1996 ) reported that people who are more active were also less likely to be obese, since exercise does not always result in increased appetite. This may be due in part to increased energy expenditures without the increase in appetite. However, in general, studies have shown that from exercise alone people do not lose significant amounts of weight but rather lose more weight through a mixture of exercise and diet. Contrary to these studies, which indicated that a combination of diet and exercise were the best

Analyzing Concepts of Love Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Analyzing Concepts of Love - Essay Example However, the same individuals that have been in a relationship for long cannot explain the meaning of love. Some individuals believe in the fact that love emanates from friendship that has cultivated trust and assurance. On the other hand, others believe that having someone special and cultivating love is a matter of luck. Worse still, others do not recognize that love does not exist, and may not have any term to explain it. Buttrose (pp.43) argues that despite the definitions that are concluded by researchers, the concept of love cannot be alienated from the life of human beings. According to Buttrose (pp.17) love is not only patient and generous, but also does it not brag of its doings. Through love, individuals are able to seek the truth that surpasses all selfish attributes of either party. Love shields the other partner from love, in an attempt to bring out the best in them. In this context, therefore, it is palpable to argue that, love must hope for the best for all individuals and should direct them towards achieving the best in their own potentiality. On another angle, other analysts argue that, individuals must be cautioned against falling in love, but maintain the aspect of staying steadfast in love, for love can be described as a dream that is likely to come true if good grounds are cultivated. Buttrose (pp.113) argues that love exists between two individuals or even more than two persons. Through love, a form of bonding is created between the involved parties. This is boosted by the commitment and zeal portrayed by the two parties in an endeavor to build love. This is an indication that, love is a feeling that creates bonding of trust, which may lead to familiarity and interdependence between the two individuals. Love in this context, is a reaction that, consoles the soul, and in a layman’s term, ‘brings a smile to the two parties’. Love is an emotion that needs to be experienced, in order to feel it. Over the years, it has prove n an uphill task to measure the depth of one’s love towards somebody or something. In the instance of motherly love, this kind of love cannot be put on a weighing scale. This love is unconditional and keeps on thriving with time. This kind of love is referred to as filial love that displays magnitude of attachment between the mother and child. Alternatively, there exists agape love that emanates from God. This kind of love is exceptional and cannot be compared to that of any other individual anywhere in the world. Love has been described as a form of magic. Just like magic can be created, the same way does love. This can only be proven if the individual focuses on the strengths of their partners and work towards boosting the ability of their partners to portray pleasant attributes. In this case, the two individuals are able to fit in the other person’s world as well as, identify the other party’s weaknesses. Each individual possesses good attributes and it only takes help and optimism of another person to cultivate these positive attributes. Just like the saying of ‘love all’ indicates, in this context, love can be defined as a magic that exits between two persons that have the ability to grow and mature. Love can be described as a long journey by two concerned parties. It is undoubted that a journey must be entangled with a myriad of issues. The major form of love that seems to face

Contrast Japanese Families with US Essay Example for Free

Contrast Japanese Families with US Essay Japanese and U. S. families have many dissimilarity one of this the family concerns, role of the family towards raising and education and wedding ceremony practiced in Japan and American people. These can be read in the next paragraph. Family Concern The Japanese family is concern with their children and their aging grandparents. Greenfield Cocking, (1994) point out the practice of â€Å"collectivism† as also reveal by Naito Gielen, this volume. The children obey their parents and they are dependent on their parents. The children must not only obey the parents and grandparents, but must observe among themselves the domestic law of seniority: thus the younger brother should obey the elder brother, and the younger sister the elder sister. At the same time, Japanese parents have a strong expectation that the oldest son will take care of them when they get old. (Kagitcibasi, 1996) This is why the Japanese parents don’t encourage children to be independent as much as American parents do. The grand parents share their experiences and wisdom with grandchildren and provide unconditioned love. In return the children respected, and appreciated learning from them. While the U. S. families the individualism is develop. (Naito Gielen, p. 10) Children are encouraged to be independent and individual. During teenage years, children tend to emphasize â€Å"self† too much, and ignore â€Å"others† as emphasized by Naito and Gielen. American teenagers’ rebel against rules to gain freedom is independent and individual to them. The author further added that the parents need to fight through against â€Å"freedom without rules and responsibilities† that children insist on holding â€Å"Individual right protected under the Law†. (American Family Tradition 2006). The children allowed going to the party alone although the parent sets the time but they cannot force their children’s to go home early. The early freedom they give from their children’s is a preparation for their being responsible. Roles in the family In Japanese raising children, supervising their educations, do some household chores and other home accounting are a sole responsibility of the mothers’. The father will provide a monthly income needed for the family. They have their grandparents living with them. The grandparents still support the married children. In contrast the American families raise their children with a shared responsibility of a mother and father. Both parents participate in their children’s school activities when they need their presence. The household works are shared by both parents. Fathers often take the financial matters however the mothers also shared some depending on their agreement. Wedding Ceremony Excerpted in the Mothra Online Organization in Japan â€Å"The Japanese wedding ceremony they called it Shinto wedding and is performed before a Shinto sanctuary, set up for the occasion unless the wedding takes place in a Shinto shrine. It is preside by a Shinto priest who first holds the purification service of all present. After a ritual by the priest, reporting to olds on the marriage and requesting their lasting favors on the newly-weds it is now customary for the bridegroom to read an oath to keep faithful and obedient to each other in the married life. The oath may be given by the go-between in behalf of the new couple. The San-San-Kudo or ceremony of the Three-Times-Three Exchange of nuptial cups is then performed by the bridegroom and bride. The bridegroom and bride proceed to the sanctuary to offer twigs of Sakaki sacred tree in worship to gods to end the main part of the wedding ceremony. Drinks of Sake are then exchanged between members and close relatives of the both families to signify their union through the wedding†. According to Shizuko Mishima, Non-family members dont usually attend the marriage ceremony itself; rather they go to the wedding reception, called Kekkon Hiroen in Japanese. This very different in American wedding, the Wedding Ceremony is most often performed as part of a religious ceremony each with its own specific customs and traditions. On the day of the wedding the Groom does not see the Bride until the actual ceremony. As Custom would have it from Victorian Times: the Bride wears Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and a Sixpence in her shoe. Finally, a ring is exchanged to mark the permanent commitment of the new spouses to each other. (American Family Tradition 2006). It was perform by a priest or a pastor depending on the religious belief agreed by the groom and bride. Conclusion As read and figured by the different author that there are lots of differences that American and Japanese exhibit. They have different upbringing when it comes to children for the Japanese practice collectivism still supporting the children even if they have graduated college. With the contrasting American, that practice individualism preparing their children for early independence. All the disciplines on how to deal different family practices are sacrifice on the part of the parents. But the culture has great influence on all this issue.

Employee development (ED) Essay Example for Free

Employee development (ED) Essay The purpose of ED can be defined as developing human potential to assist organizations and individuals to achieve their objectives. (Redman Wilkinson, 2001 p.129). Since the impact of the globalization, the new positioning and competitive competences of the company will bring the HR department new challenges of finding effective career paths for their global employees. A study conducted by the Global Leadership Institute shows a positive relationship between the level of employee internationalization and the organizations Return on Assets. (Black et al, 1999, p1). Thats why according to Black an international assignment is the single most powerful experience in shaping the perspective and capabilities of effective global leadersA global assignment play important roles in succession planning and leadership development; in coordination and control; and in technology, innovation, and information exchange and dissemination. According to a survey by the National Foreign Trade Council, the number of Americans working overseas, jumped 30% in 1995. Of the 74 companies the NFTC polled, 71% said they expect this growth to continue. (Hayes et al, 1996) However, somewhere between 25and 40 per cent of foreign assignments fail in US transnationals. (Stonehouse et al, 2000,p.210). In fact, 20% to 48% of expatriates leave their companies within the first year of returning from an international assignment In a Business Horizons survey of 135 repatriated employees, only 39% felt their firm used their newly acquired skills; a meager 29% claimed that the assignments helped their careers. (Hayes et al, 1996). Such a failure is partly due to the mismatch between the organizational goals and personal goals, which is the main purpose of ED. Other reasons are: * Lack of training, this includes language and cross culture training. A recent survey conducted by Runzheimer International, found that only 42% of the 54 multinational companies polled had any formal training program for acculturating expatriates with their host country. (Hayes et al, 1996). * Family-related problems are perhaps the most important cause of failure amongst expatriates (Harvey, 1985). Such family problems include relating to the adaptation of both spouse and children to a new cultural and social environment. (Stonehouse et al, 2000,p.210) * Inadequate compensation (Stonehouse et al, 2000,p.210) * Feeling of loss of status resulting from working at the periphery. (Stonehouse et al, 2000,p.210) * Expatriates are often staying within the circle of the emigrant community, (Hayes et al, 1996) which reduces the chances to communicate with local culture and create a barrier between local people and them. * With international assignments becoming more commonplace, few companies are implying that there is any career advancement on the horizon for taking oneMany of the who have been on overseas assignments come back and move right back where they were (Hayes et al, 1996) Thus, make the employees think that their career path is stopped or blurred. In order to provide the employees a smooth international career development path, as well as to create an internationalized employees pool, organizations thus have to design a more systematic ED plan. This plan will include a clear definition of the international assignment, full training of the language and culture, effective expatriate policies, etc. For those MNCs with various employees come from different backgrounds, because of the culture impact, employees will have different views of career path. For example, in achievement-oriented corporation in western countries, young, promising managers are often sent on challenging assignment to faraway countries, whereas in ascribing cultures, older people, males, highly qualified persons are sent for those independent tasks or specific functions. (Trompenaars et al, 1998) Thus, organizations have to fully understand the career meaning to all of its employees and develop different career themes. Social Disorganization Theory

Social Disorganization Theory The social disorganisation theory was one of the most important criminological theories developed from the Chicago School of thought, namely research conducted by Shaw and Mckay (1942). Shaw and McKay (1942) used spatial maps to study the residential locations of juveniles referred to Chicago courts, they discovered that rates of crime were not equally dispersed. Instead, crime was concentrated in certain areas and interestingly remained stable in such areas despite the changes of the individuals who lived there. Unlike other theories of delinquency, The Social Disorganisation Theory suggested that where an individual lived was more instrumental in determining the likelihood that an individual will become involved in criminal activities than individual characteristics such as age and gender. The theory was not intended to be applicable to all types of crimes but mainly to street crimes at neighbourhood level. The Social disorganization theory directly linked high crime rates to neigh bourhood ecological characteristics such as poverty, residential mobility, family disruption and racial heterogeneity (Gaines and Miller, 2011). All of which will be discussed in more detail throughout this essay. The first core element of the social disorganization theory to be discussed is Poverty, which can be defined as the state of being extremely poor. Such a lack of wealth is often seen to be due to the lack of employment opportunities. Such incentives like the Princes Trust and Catch 22 focus on poorer areas of society and seek to increase the employment opportunities for young people there. Jenson (2003) found that when employment opportunities increase pressures on residents to flee decrease ensuring more stable and improved communities. However it is when employment opportunities remain low that economic deprivation grows which could lead to social disorganization, which in turn leads to crime (Shaw and McKay, 1942). Other theories such as The Strain Theory (Merton, 1957) support the impact that poverty can have on a communities crime rates as due to lack of employment opportunities people turn to other methods of fulfilling their financial and material needs in an anti social way i f this cannot be done pro-socially such as through employment. Racial Heterogeneity is the second element of the social disorganisation theory to be reveiwed; this notion is related to the diverseness of races within a society. The social disorganization theory proposes that crime occurs when the methods of social control are weakened (Sun, Triplett and Gainey, 2004). Interestingly it is racial heterogeneity and urbanization that are predicted to weaken the control of individuals to most, due to lack of communication and interaction among residents (Sun, Triplett and Gainey, 2004). It is the lack of knowledge that allows for the racial separation along with the media often using particular races as scapegoats for certain crimes almost creating a moral panic within the communities singling out a certain race which would then increase the likelihood of their engagement in criminal activity (Bowling, 2002). This is supported by the findings that even among poorer neighborhoods, some racially diverse and others racially homogeneous, local friendship s lower certain crime rates such as assault (Sun, Triplett and Gainey, 2004). The third element of the social disorganisation theory to be considered is residential mobility this refers to the frequency of which individuals change their residence. Residential mobility has proven to help to explain the social disorganization theory, it has successfully explained automobile theft (Rice and Smith, 2002), gang crime (Lane and Meeker, 2000) and sexual re-offending (Mustaine, Tewksbury and Stengel ,2006). Shaw and McKay (1942) also noted that socially disorganized communities tended to produce criminal traditions that could be passed to successive generations of youths, due to the lack of residential mobility; criminal subcultures developed and overrun communities. It was hard for people to re-locate for reasons such as financial and fears of leaving that community. Residential mobility and poverty were often seen as interrelating factors in research on the social disorganisation theory as they were both significant predictors of delinquency but were stronger predic tors when looked at together (Blau and Blau, 1982). The final element to be discussed is family disruption; family has proven to be leading process within the social disorganisation theory (Sun, Triplett and Gainey, 2004). Sampson (1986) suggested that social disorganization may affect youth crime in particular its effects on family structures and stability. Consistent with the previous research social disorganization may influence the level of crime through its effect on family, however other researchers found that family may be used to alleviate the damaging effects of social disorganization. Tolan, Gorman-Smith and Henry (2003) found that parenting practices somewhat mediated the correlation between disorganised community and delinquency. However this study looked at families who were not seen to be disrupted. Burfeind (1984) found that that family disruption influenced delinquency in different ways, such as: the level of attachment to the father and paternal discipline. However the majority of studies that looked at the interactio n of family disruption and social disorganisation theory focused on male offenders and did not consider female crime; something which has been steadily on the increase in todays society. Despite its early origins, social disorganization theory continues to be prominent in the study of delinquency. In fact, Kubrin and Weizer (2003) suggested that the theory may be stronger now than when it was first proposed. As suggested in this essay, social disorganization theory continues to dominate in explaining delinquency in regards to the neighbourhood characteristics such as; poverty, racial heterogeneity, family disruption and residential mobility. It could be suggested that to prevent delinquency it is important to organise communities who are disorganized for example providing youth centres, employment opportunities and empowering individuals to maintain their homes in disorganized communities. By improving neighbourhoods and making them more appealing, social controls and relationships will be strengthened. All the elements discussed within the essay have a clear impact on the social disorganisation theory and the more of which are present in a community increases the li kelihood of social disorganisation and delinquency (Shaw and McKay, 1942). However it must be noted that poverty was often found to be the strongest and most consistent predictor of crime compared to the other three core elements: racial heterogeneity, racial mobility and family disruption (Warner and Pierce, 1993).

Acknowledgments ______________________________________________________________________________ Thank you for the support and encouragement that you have given me throughout the trials of my experiment. I would like to thank my parents for the support they have given me and for helping me when I was in a tough situation. I would like to thank my teacher, Mr. Johnson for the support that he has given me and for his guidance and encouragement. I would also like to thank my dentist for supplying me with my prime ingredient of this experiment, teeth. Purpose ______________________________________________________________________________ The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effect of beverages, such as, orange juice, coca cola, milk, coffee, and water, on the rate of decomposition of teeth. This experiment will be able to determine which of the five beverages cause a tooth to decompose faster than the others. These specific drinks were chosen because they are what normal people have in their refrigerator or pantry on a normal basis. Most americans consume coffee, and some sort of juice in the morning, throughout the day they should have at least of glass of water, and most people have at least on soft drink a day. The acid in orange juice and the carbonation in soda can damage the enamel of the tooth causing it to erode faster (Orange, July 2, 2009). The lack of saliva can cause decay of teeth because saliva protects the gums in the mouth from infection. Some causes of reduced saliva are coffee and cola drinks (Reduce,April 21, 2012). This experiment reveals which of these five drinks increase the process of decay faster than others. A MODEST PROPOSAL Essay -- essays research papers

In the nineteenth century, Ireland was marked by extensive personal suffering. Civilians, predominantly the catholic lower and middle-classes, were having a hard time finding jobs, paying rent, feeding their children, as well as putting up with overpopulation which contributed to the overall growing problem of poverty. During this time of suffering, many began to question whether Britain acted as hastily and as effectively as they could have, as well as believing that centuries of British rule and/or political oppression was a fundamental cause of the famine (which originated from a potato crop failure). Jonathan Swift, a poor-boy who found his niche as a social critic/spokesman for Irish rights, after analyzing the possible causes, he concludes that England should not be the sole one to blame and therefore proposes a rather straightforward solution to Ireland’s evident predicament by insisting that the abundance of children of the poor to be used as a food supply. Jonathan Swift blames the English Protestants for their cruel and inhumane treatment of the papists, or poor Irish Catholics, through both political and economic oppression. This is seen when the author’s â€Å"persona† believes that England would be more than willing to eat the Irish poor even if such a proposal had never been suggested, saying that, â€Å"†¦I could name a country which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it.† Being a son of pauper parents, as well as having spent years in Ireland, he first han...

Comparing Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Song of Roland Essay

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Song of Roland In mythological Europe, knightly heroes abounded whereever one could choose to roam. There are hundreds of tales of knights who embodied the concept of chivalry, slew huge dragons, slew legions of foes in single combat, and still made it home in time for dinner. Of all these tales, ballads and poems, a few have risen to the fore front of the genre as an example for the rest of the stories to follow. I will be comparing the positive and negative personality traits of two heroes from the famous poems "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "The Song of Roland." On the lighter side, both Gawain and Roland had more positive attributes than they did negative. Both men were honorable, almost to a fault. For example in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" Gawain agreed to be on time for his own execution: "Nor I know you not, knight, your name nor your court. But tell me truly thereof, and teach me your name, and I shall fare forth to find you, so far as I may, and this I say in good certain, and swear upon oath." (G&GK, pt.1, ln. 400-403) Gawain's agreement might have been honorable, but it doesn't strike me ... ...ght when it came to politics, apparently. All of these attributes might be considered undesirable in a knight. Though the characteristics of honor, fearlessness, and poor people skills might seem to be perfect for a knight, a perfect hero just doesn't seem realistic to a listener or a reader with out some sort of a vice or flaw. It makes them seem closer and more human to who the reader. This is important to a good story, simply because if a hero is totally unbelievable the ballad becomes more of a tall tale or a story to be laughed at. And while it might be fun to laugh at a "B" ballad every once in awhile, it just doesn't compare to a good action plot line. As a result, Gawain and Roland each flaws. Roland's just happens to be terminal.

A social construction Essay

As a social construction, ethnicity is defined as a group individual having a common identifying heritage (Yinger, 1994). The common heritage may comprise of a unifying language, cultural values, norms, and beliefs, and a common ancestry. This has the implication that people belonging to a given ethnic group identify from others with eminent distinctive characteristics, an element which ensure their recognition in the larger human community. Owing to the common heritage that defines an ethnic group, ethnicity encompasses other communal aspects such as political, social, and economic interests, territorial ownership, and similar behavioral patterns. The global community has witnessed numerous incidences of ethnic hostilities over the past few decades. Among this is the 2007 post-election violence which saw hundreds of Kenyans killed and thousands of others fleeing their homes to refuge camps within and outside the country (BBC, 2007). According to available information, the conflict was mainly a fight for land possession in the rift valley region between the Kalenjin and Kikuyu ethnic groups (BBC, 2007). In the American nation, ethnic hostilities are quite common. This can be evident from statistical evident from a 2000 research which indicated that most citizens of Asian origin are mainly engaged in small business established. Such have been closely attributed to the high levels of labor market discrimination practices against these members of the community. In addition, since after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, racial profiling and discrimination against individuals of Islamic origin have been on the hike. This has been due to the perceptions associating Muslim with terrorism activities. Lastly, ethnic hostility can be evident in the school population trends in the US. Records indicate that as at 2003 estimated 87% of enrollments in public-schools in Chicago where from the black community compared to less than 10% from the white population.

Home School vs Public School Essay

Home train and domain separate littleons is a debated able. Pargonnts are disputing whether infrastructure school precept or a unexclusive school education is more unspoiled for their claw. An education that fits the of necessity of a electric razor is important thats why on that point are things to be considered when choosing an educational roadway for a nipper. Certainly in a public school enclotheting a elicit should take note that their sisterren is in a recrudesce learning purlieu to aim and gain tender mutation.Whereas in a menageschool setting they wont pack that face-to face interaction with early(a) youngsterren of contrastive cultures and races. Exposing a claw to diversity at an early adhere along with helps to spirt them into more accepting great deal, and they would be less likely to shy away from peeled things. Exposure to different cultures and religions is different in a central office school setting. The babe doesnt get to shake the other(a) persons hand or speak to them to kip d knowledge that they sound a little different and things like that spark their curiosity to acquire questions and find out more astir(predicate) the differences and why.The only socialization the child receives is that pertaining to adulterous activities after their home school boundary such as karate or soccer. acquire a grip on social diversity at an early age underside help a child to create new ideas and change that clear be beneficial to society and the world. assuredly another thing to consider is the painful truth near negative lucifer pressure and how it is more present in public school than in home school. This is genius of the main reasons put forwards decide that home school is better for their child and its understandable. However, catch pressure wont just fade into the background. Its talked about in the newspaper and as healthful as on television, how children succumb to the equal pressure and in the end t akes their own life and sometimes the lives of others. Although parents choose to home school their child, it doesnt make the threat go away or study it. If a parent is deciding that a home school education is better for their child because of associate pressure then, they should as well be awarethat they are sheltering the child from the harsh reality of the world. It wont benefit the child is he/she is shelter from it and never explained what it is or what it even sounds like. That child ordaining grow up and get out in the world and doesnt understand why some people arent very nice or single them out of the crowd. A parent should take the time to understand for themselves what peer pressure is, what the cause is, and how to deal with it. The parents should likewise take the time to t from each whiz their child how to avoid it.Once a parent has enough knowledge on peer pressure, they can explain it to the child and give them a understanding so they are not left in the mood y no field of study what educational room is chosen. Although there are many pros and cons about home school and public school, one of the biggest benefits of home teaching is the student/ instructor ratio. The teacher has more time for each individual student, therefore meaning they have time for increasing their learning. Its easier to create a accented learning environment without distractions and interruptions. In public schools, there are at least 20 to 30 students to one teacher, therefore, those distractions and interruptions are present. This makes it difficult for the child to focus and gain the knowledge needed to have success in the world. Unquestionably within a home school setting, a child can receive a customized education. Some children attempt with math or reading. Some kids have giftedness in skill or history. No matter what their struggle or giftedness may be, home schooling permits the child and the parent to customize the education to maximize learning, get past and intone and weaknesses, and provide focus for those things that the child has a special interest in. The way that homeschool is situated is beneficial to a child that has needs concerning an education. For example, a child that has trouble way because they feel bored. A computer program center on on a favorite subject would help. In public school, the curriculum is set and there really is no changing that fact. This isnt necessarily a horrid thing because it could teach a child that sometimes you dont ever get a choice and thats okay. In conclusion many parents regard the best educational path for their child. Whether that be in a homeschool setting where they can choose the childs curriculum or in a public school setting where the child will have more of a hap to be socially diverse. No matter which option of an education is chosen, the parent will realize that all things must be considered when deciding on a erect and healthy education for their child.
